Movement: S 64 Atelier swivel chair by Thonet
A classic is on the move - the world of work is undergoing constant change. Employees switch back and forth between home office, workplace and work on the road in trains and planes. And furniture classics also have to become more flexible. Thonet has taken this to heart and given an icon of classic furniture design wheels.
The S 64 by Marcel Breuer is now available in the Atelier version, making it mobile as a swivel chair with a central base on castors. The Swiss designer Christophe Marchand accompanied this redesign of a design classic and dedicated himself to this task with great sensitivity and respect for the original design idea.
Marcel Breuer - Visionary
After abandoning his art studies, Marcel Breuer moved to the state Bauhaus in Weimar, where he studied from 1920 to 1924. After moving to Dessau, he became director of the famous design school from 1925 to 1928. Constructivism characterised his style and he developed visionary furniture designs made of tubular steel. Today, he is considered one of the most important architects and designers of modernism.
Material and format
The frame with the five-star tubular base is made of aluminium. The wooden parts are made of stained beech. The back is made of wickerwork. The seat is upholstered and available in different versions. The chair is 68 cm wide, 68 cm deep and 89 cm high. The seat height is 39 cm.
Note on the wickerwork used
The wickerwork used is a natural product. This type of wickerwork is manufactured exclusively in the Far East and is delivered to Thonet rolled up in sheets. The cane threads are peeled from the Rotang palm, which grows in East Asia, and glued together. As this is a natural product, the quality and width of the individual threads can vary. Dull-looking areas are, for example, growth rings of the plant. Growth and harvesting conditions also influence the quality of the weave.
The production of furniture by Thonet is carried out with a high level of technical and craftsmanship effort in order to guarantee an appropriate level of quality. For example, every chair with a wicker covering is specially checked again before it leaves the factory.
