The way to modernity: the S 43 PVFST tubular steel cantilever chair from Thonet
Are you looking for an elegant chair that is not only comfortable but also extremely practical? Then take a look at the S 43 PVFST from Thonet. The S 43 is a real design icon from Bauhaus times and goes back to the Dutchman Mart Stam. Today, the cubic chair made of bent tubular steel is firmly part of the image of contemporary interior design, but back then it was one thing above all: a big and courageous step towards modernity.
Since the development of the S 43 in the 1930s, the tradition-rich company Thonet has been responsible for the production of the chair. The manufacturer holds the artistic copyright to build the S 43 according to the original model and does so with precision craftsmanship and using the highest quality materials. As a comfortable version, the S 43 PVFST has upholstery in addition to armrests and can be flexibly stacked. This classic is an ideal match for modern furnishings and contributes to a tasteful atmosphere.
Ahead of his time - the Dutchman Mart Stam
Born in the Netherlands in 1899, Mart Stam initially worked for various architectural firms throughout Europe before being invited by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe to the Werkbund exhibition in Stuttgart-Weißenhof in 1927. For the Weißenhofsiedlung there, he designed a terraced house including interior furnishings. This was the birth of the legendary cantilever chair made of tubular steel, which managed entirely without rear legs. The iconic chair is still one of the absolute design classics today. Until his death in 1986, the Bauhaus lecturer was known as a busy architect who appreciated the functionalist straightforward style and realised contemporary buildings.
Thonet - design furniture with a long tradition
Thonet from Frankenberg in northern Hesse is not only one of the oldest furniture manufacturers in the world - the company has always had a keen sense for forward-looking ideas. As early as 1859, the company's founder Michael Thonet attempted to design a simple chair that could be manufactured industrially by bending beech wood. The result was the inimitable chair no. 14, also known as the Viennese coffee house chair. In the 1930s, Thonet was the main producer of the revolutionary Bauhaus tubular steel furniture designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Mart Stam or Marcel Breuer, among others. Today, Thonet is still authorised to produce these furniture classics. The company is currently working with many renowned designers from all over the world to expand its own collection.
