World-famous: The S 43 PVF cantilever chair by Thonet
Significant design, great comfort: more than 90 years ago, the Dutch architect Mart Stam created a cantilever chair made of bent tubular steel that left the tried and tested ideas of the furniture industry behind. But the minimalist design language not only exudes a unique aesthetic, the absence of rear legs makes sitting a springy experience - as if you were floating in the air. People at the time were amazed by this feature.
To this day, the S 43 has attracted many imitators. But anyone interested in an original cannot get past the Thonet brand. Thus, the company realised the tubular steel designs of Mart Stam from the very beginning and continues to do so to this day. The artistic copyright authorises only Thonet to produce the strictly cubic chair according to the original model. With the S 43 PVF, you get the classic as a comfortable version with armrests and upholstery.
Ahead of his time - the Dutchman Mart Stam
Born in the Netherlands in 1899, Mart Stam initially worked for various architectural firms throughout Europe before being invited by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe to the Werkbund exhibition in Stuttgart-Weißenhof in 1927. For the Weißenhofsiedlung there, he designed a terraced house including interior furnishings. This was the birth of the legendary cantilever chair made of tubular steel, which managed entirely without rear legs. The iconic chair is still one of the absolute design classics today. Until his death in 1986, the Bauhaus lecturer was known as a busy architect who appreciated the functionalist straightforward style and realised contemporary buildings.
Thonet - design furniture with a long tradition
Thonet from Frankenberg in northern Hesse is not only one of the oldest furniture manufacturers in the world - the company has always had a keen sense for forward-looking ideas. As early as 1859, the company's founder Michael Thonet attempted to design a simple chair that could be manufactured industrially by bending beech wood. The result was the inimitable chair No. 14, also known as the Viennese coffee house chair. In the 1930s, Thonet was the main producer of the revolutionary Bauhaus tubular steel furniture designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Mart Stam or Marcel Breuer, among others. Today, Thonet is still authorised to produce these furniture classics. Currently, the company is working with many renowned designers from all over the world to expand its own collection.
