Straightforwardness: The S 43 F tubular steel classic with armrests by ThonetMart
Stam'
s
famous chair is a true highlight of design history. Its popular appearance makes the S 43 F cantilever chair a symbol of modernity that combines functionality, simplicity and seating comfort. The curved steel tubes meant that rear legs were no longer necessary - a phenomenal effect that gave people the feeling of floating in the air. In the early 20th century, this bold design was like a revolution. For the S 43 version, Mart Stam combined the tubular steel frame with minimalist moulded wooden shells.
Then, as now
, theartistic copyright lies with the traditional furniture manufacturer Thonet. Due to its no-frills, no-nonsense aesthetics, the elegant chair is still enormously popular today. Whether at home, in the office, for waiting areas or hotels: the possible uses are manifold. The high quality of the materials makes the S 43 F cantilever chair with armrests a durable piece of furniture that your grandchildren will still be able to enjoy.
Ahead of his time - the Dutchman Mart
StamBorn in the Netherlands in 1899, Mart Stam initially worked for various architectural firms throughout Europe before being invited
byLudwig Mies van der Rohe to the Werkbund exhibition in Stuttgart-Weißenhof
in1927. For the Weißenhofsiedlung there, he designed a terraced house including interior furnishings. This was the birth of the legendary cantilever chair made of tubular steel, which managed entirely without rear legs. The iconic chair is still one of the absolute design classics today. Until his death in 1986, the Bauhaus lecturer was known as a busy architect who appreciated
thefunctionalist, straight-lined style and realised contemporary buildings.
Thonet - design furniture with a long
traditionThonet
from Frankenberg in northern Hesse is not only one of the oldest furniture manufacturers in the world - the company has always had a keen sense for forward-looking ideas. As early as 1859, the company's founder Michael Thonet tried to design a simple chair that could be manufactured industrially by bending beech wood. The result was the inimitable chair no. 14, also known as the Viennese coffee house chair. In the 1930s, Thonet was the main producer of the revolutionary Bauhaus tubular steel furniture designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Mart Stam or Marcel Breuer, among others. Today, Thonet is still authorised to produce these furniture classics.
Thecompany is currently working with many renowned designers
fromall over the world to expand its own collection.
