Relax with style: Platner armchair small by Knoll
With the small Platner armchair by Knoll International, every minute you spend on it becomes a moment of relaxation - and with style. Whether in the living room, restaurant or lounge area, the armchair adds a modern touch to any room and also a certain touch of industrial chic thanks to the filigree steel wires.
The beautifully upholstered armchair with u-shaped rounded fibreglass shell provides a cosy feel-good atmosphere. It can also be wonderfully combined with the various Platner tables and thus perfectly complements the Platner collection!
Filigree steel: Platner Collection
Originally introduced by Knoll in 1966, the Platner collection is an icon of modern furniture, capturing the "decorative, soft, graceful" forms that were beginning to permeate the modern vocabulary at the time. Within the collection by Warren Platner, which the designer created exclusively for Knoll International, you will find extraordinary design tables, armchairs and stools. For example, you can also find the Platner coffee table, stools or armchairs in our online shop, which are especially eye-catching because of their filigree frames bent out of round steel.
Platner personally developed the production techniques for the complicated designs. The pieces are created by welding hundreds of cylindrically curved steel rods to circular frames that serve as both structure and ornament. Each chair requires over a thousand welds in the process.
Contemporary design
Warren Platner studied at Cornell University, graduating in 1941 with a degree in architecture. Following his work with legendary designers Raymond Loewy, Eero Saarinen and I. M. Pei, he opened his own architecture practice and immersed himself in the creation of steel wire furniture, devising the method and tooling to produce the lounge chair in the line as well.
Platner made notable architectural contributions throughout his career. Notable among his residential and commercial projects are the Georg Jensen Design Center and the Windows on the World restaurant in the World Trade Center, both in New York City. It was his furniture collection for Knoll, however, that earned Platner worldwide renown. Knoll also introduced an executive private office collection designed by Platner.
Knoll International – A belief in modern design
In 1938, Knoll International was founded by Hans and Florence Knoll, who embraced the creative genius at the Bauhaus School and the Cranbrook Academy of Art to create new types of furniture and environments for the workplace. Their approach was to combine craftsmanship with technology through the use of design. Florence Knoll also developed the idea of the modern office and pioneered the interior design profession.
Knoll has been recognized internationally for creating workplace and residential furnishings that inspire, evolve, and endure. With its thoughtful, inventive products Knoll responds to individual work styles and transcends multiple generations. Knoll's commitment to modern, sustainable design and understanding of the workplace results in a unique portfolio. Here, the latest collections sit alongside modern classics and iconic products.
For more than 80 years now Knoll has remained true to the Bauhaus design philosophy that modern furniture should complement architectural space, not compete with it. Therefore, they use modern design to connect people to their work, their lives, their world. The essence of it all: modern living and working with a contemporary approach without losing a connection to the past.
Material and format
The foundation of the small Platner armchair is a frame made of vertical steel wire rods that are welded together with circular horizontal rods and edge rods. Here you have the choice between the silvery nickel and the dark bronze version. The base has a clear plastic ring that forms a smooth bottom surface.
Perched on the frame is a moulded fibreglass shell with a short cushion in the upper back and seat cushion. The cushion has a latex filling and is provided with a zip as well as a Velcro fastener to attach it to the seat.
The small armchair is 73 cm wide, 55 cm deep and 75 cm high and has a seat height of 49 cm.
