Filigree steel: Platner collection
Originally introduced by Knoll in 1966, the Platner collection is an icon of modern furniture, capturing the "decorative, soft, graceful" forms that were beginning to permeate the modern vocabulary at this time. Within Warren Platner's collection, which the designer created exclusively for Knoll International, you will find exceptional design tables, armchairs and stools. For example, you will also find the Platner coffee table, stool or armchair in our online shop, which are particularly eye-catching due to their filigree frames bent from round steel.
Platner personally developed the production techniques for the intricate designs. The pieces are created by welding hundreds of cylindrically bent steel rods to circular frames that serve as both structure and ornament. Each chair requires over a thousand welds.
Contemporary design
Warren Platner studied at Cornell University and graduated with a degree in architecture in 1941. After working with legendary designers Raymond Loewy, Eero Saarinen and I. M. Pei, he opened his own architectural practice and immersed himself in the creation of steel wire furniture, also developing the method and tooling to produce the in-line lounge chair.
Platner made notable architectural contributions throughout his career. Notable among his residential and commercial projects are the Georg Jensen Design Center and the Windows on the World Restaurant at the World Trade Centre, both in New York City. However, it was his furniture collection for Knoll that brought Platner worldwide recognition. Knoll also introduced a Platner-designed collection for private offices.
Knoll International - The belief in modern design
in 1938, Knoll International was founded by Hans and Florence Knoll, who utilised the creative genius of the Bauhaus school and the Cranbrook Academy of Art to create new types of furniture and environments for the workplace. Their approach was to combine craftsmanship with technology through the use of design. Florence Knoll also developed the idea of the modern office and pioneered the field of interior design.
Knoll is internationally recognised for creating workplace and home furniture that inspires, evolves and endures. With its thoughtful, inventive products, Knoll caters to individual work styles and outlasts generations. Knoll's commitment to modern, sustainable design and understanding of the workplace results in a unique portfolio. Here, the latest collections sit alongside modern classics and iconic products.
For more than 80 years, Knoll has remained true to the Bauhaus design philosophy that modern furniture should complement architectural space, not compete with it. That's why Knoll uses modern design to connect people with their work, their lives, their world. The essence of it all: modern living and working with a contemporary approach, without losing the connection to the past.
