Anniversary edition: PH5 pendant light from Louis Poulsen
To mark its 150th birthday, Louis Poulsen is presenting its anniversary collection. This includes iconic products that have been turned into extraordinary collector's items, such as the PH5 pendant lamp. The iconic design is based on the same principles as Henningsen's system with three reflective shades, which provides a soft, pleasant and completely glare-free light and makes it the perfect table lamp for the dining room.
About the designer
Poul Henningsen was born in Copenhagen in 1894, the son of Danish writers Agnes Henningsen and Carl Ewald. He initially designed traditional functionalist architecture. However, his professional interest soon focussed on lighting design - for which he is also famous. He also expanded his field of activity to include writing and became a journalist and author.
In 1958, Poul Henningsen designed the PH 5 in response to the constant changes in the shape and size of light bulbs. He wanted to create a luminaire that could be used with any light source.
The luminaire emits a pleasant, glare-free light. The basis for this is provided by Poul Henningsen's reflective three-shade system, which directs the majority of the light downwards. The luminaire also emits light to the side and illuminates itself at the same time, creating a soft glow in the centre of the luminaire.
Material and shape
The lamp is made of twisted steel, the outside is wet-painted white, while the inside is powder-coated light pink. The lower shade is made of twisted steel, while the other shades and the anti-glare screen are made of spun aluminium. The cover is made of frosted glass and the struts are made of rolled aluminium.
