Belgian design with added value
Dirk Wynants is a well-known designer and founder of the Belgian brand Extremis. His designs are influenced by his family roots in carpentry, his training in design and the introduction to the world of metal by his family-in-law. He studied interior architecture and furniture design at the Sint-Lucas Institute of Architecture in Ghent, Belgium. in 1994, shortly after completing his studies, he founded his first company, Extremis. A wooden barn somewhere in the Flemish countryside in the Westhoek region initially became the centre of activities.
This is where the first design ideas were created that combined wood and metal. Wynants' first design, "Gargantua", is still considered one of the most important design classics in the field of garden furniture. Many innovative designs were to follow. Over the years, Wynants worked with other internationally renowned designers such as Michael Young and Arnold Merckx. Today, he is also the managing director of his own design studio, Wynants Design Works.
For Dirk Wynants, a valuable product is more than just a good-looking trendy object: "A design is often judged according to several aspects, for example whether it is profitable, sustainable, beautiful or functional. I only want to create products that combine all aspects and also offer added value. Masterful design offers solutions to problems. Appearance must not be the result of trends or taste, but of practical considerations and function. In this way, a product becomes timeless and sustainable."
