Unusual Design: Hat Trick Chair with Armrests Knoll International
Inspired by the surprising strength of the apple crates he played on as a child, Frank Gehry created his thoroughly original collection of bentwood furniture. The ribbon-like designs transcend the conventions of style by exploring, like the great modernists, the essential challenge of deriving form from function. Today, Gehry's groundbreaking collection of laminated maple wood chairs and tables is part of the permanent collections of museums around the world.
Material and format
The chair is constructed from hard, white maple veneers in 5 cm wide, 1 mm thick strips. All wood grains run in the same direction to increase elasticity. Thermofixed assembly glue provides structural rigidity without the need for metal joints, while allowing ergonomic movement and flexibility. The backs of all chairs are flexible for added comfort.
