Sit in and feel good: Domus armchair Artek
The great Finnish design classic Domus by Artek is quickly described: Sit down and feel good! The casual armchair convinces with its anatomically adapted, sweeping shape. The armchair owes its name to its first purpose: to meet the needs of Finnish students. The designer Ilmari Tapiovaara created the later cult armchair for their Domus Academica dormitory in Helsinki in 1946. In addition to comfort, the visual appearance of this piece of seating furniture is paramount - and it really is something to behold. With its solid frame and curved seat, it looks down-to-earth and elegant at the same time. The solid piece of furniture is made of high-quality birch wood and has undergone various finishes. Whether lacquered or stained - with the lounge chair by Ilmari Tapiovaara, you are guaranteed to make the right choice. The Domus armchair is also available with an upholstered seat and/or backrest. There is a choice of different fabric and leather covers.
Finnish cult designer Ilmari Tapiovaara
Ilmari Tapiovaara, modernist designer, was born in Hämeenlinna, Finland, in 1914. He graduated as an interior and industrial designer from the Institute of Industrial Design in Helsinki in 1937. During his studies, he worked for Alvar Aalto in the London Artek office in 1935/1936. After graduating, he also spent six months in Paris, where he was employed as an assistant in the office of the architect Le Corbusier.
Artek - always modern
Artek was founded in Helsinki in 1935 by four young idealists: Alvar and Aino Aalto, Maire Gullichsen and Nils-Gustav Hahl. With their designs, they wanted to promote a modern culture of living. The radical spirit of its founders still lives in Artek today and so the company produces furniture from the world of modern design that stands at the interface of design, architecture and art. They are characterised by clarity, functionality and poetic simplicity.
