Harmonious and comfortable: Domus chair Artek
Proven and coveted for decades: the Domus chair by Artek. It all began in 1946 with the construction of a student housing complex in Helsinki, for which the architect Ilmari Tapiovaara also designed the interior. The Domus Academica complex was equipped, among other things, with the very chair that has been delighting not only Finnish furniture lovers ever since. Stackable, comfortable, ergonomic and with a timeless, elegant design, the Domus chair and the Domus armchair have adorned numerous student rooms, corridors, lecture halls, conference rooms and the cafeteria. But design furniture fans from all over the world have also long since discovered the Domus classics for their own four walls. The design chair by Artek is made of solid lacquered or stained birch wood, but there is also a special version in clear lacquered oak. Its well thought-out design and the rounded shapes make for its harmonious overall appearance. Another advantage: the Domus chair fits into almost any living ambience. The chair is also available with an upholstered seat and back. There is a choice of different fabric and leather covers.
Finnish designer Ilmari Tapiovaara
Ilmari Tapiovaara, designer of the modern age, was born in Hämeenlinna, Finland, in 1914. He graduated as an interior and industrial designer from the Institute of Industrial Design in Helsinki in 1937. During his studies, he worked for Alvar Aalto in the London Artek office in 1935/1936. After graduating, he also spent six months in Paris, where he was employed as an assistant in the office of the architect Le Corbusier.
Artek - always modern
Artek was founded in Helsinki in 1935 by four young idealists: Alvar and Aino Aalto, Maire Gullichsen and Nils-Gustav Hahl. With their designs, they wanted to promote a modern culture of living. The radical spirit of its founders still lives in Artek today and so the company produces furniture from the world of modern design that stands at the interface of design, architecture and art. They are characterised by clarity, functionality and poetic simplicity.
Material and format
The design chair is made of solid, clear lacquered or stained birch wood in different colours such as white, black or honey, the seat and backrest are made of pressed birch plywood. There is a special version in clear lacquered oak. There is a choice of different cover fabrics for the upholstered Domus chair variant: Remix (90% wool, 10% polyamide), Hallingdal (70% virgin wool, 30% viscose), Steelcut Trio (90% virgin wool, 10% polyamide), Sörensen Prestige leather (black pigmented leather), Sörensen Viking leather (white pigmented leather), Anilinie Sörensen Elegance leather (walnut-coloured leather). The cult design chair from Finland is stackable, 58 cm wide, 54 cm deep and 79 cm high. The seat height is 45 cm, the height of the armrest 66 cm.
