Greta M. Grossmann, born in Sweden in 1906, is one of the outstanding personalities of modern furniture design. Her unique design language and innovative approaches had a decisive influence on the furniture industry of the 20th century. Grossmann studied at the renowned Konstfack School of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm before setting out to conquer the world of design.
Her career took her to California, where she sought refuge from the political unrest in Europe in 1940. In Los Angeles, Greta M. Grossmann quickly established herself as a leading designer, inspiring with her avant-garde vision and sense of functionality. Her work is characterised by clear lines, innovative shapes and the skilful integration of colours. She did not shy away from combining traditional materials with unconventional elements.
Grossmann's ability to consider space and light in her designs is particularly reflected in her lamps. One of her best-known creations is undoubtedly the Grashoppa floor lamp, an iconic design that impresses with its elegant yet functional character. The slender, arched silhouette is reminiscent of the grace of a grasshopper's legs, giving the luminaire its unique name.
