Edward Barber & Jay Osgerby
"Design is the answer to a very difficult question." - Jay Osgerby
Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby (both born 1969) studied architecture and interior design together at the Royal College of Art in London. They founded their own architecture and design studio Barber Osgerby in East London in 1996. Together they work at the interface of architecture, industrial and furniture design.
Their approach is characterised by experimentation and innovation, as well as an inquiring attitude towards materiality and colour. Thus, the designs of the design duo create solutions that reflect the close relationship of their work to industrial processes and new technologies, but also their affinity to the visual arts. In 2001, Barber and Osgerby then founded another studio, Universial, which focuses on architecture, interior design and exhibition design. It is regarded as one of the world's most innovative consultancies for creative design.
In the design furniture sector, the design duo is best known for the Mariposa series and the Tip Ton chair by Vitra.
