Unmistakable: TT54 chair by Richard Lampert

Even if the TT54 chair by Richard Lampert comes across as simple, it is still unmistakable. This combination is typical of the German architect Paul Schneider-Esleben, who designed the dining chair in 1954 from wickerwork and 12 mm round steel. The TT54 is restrained in its design and yet has a particularly high recognition value due to the stretched natural rattan. Rattan is a natural material made from the trunk of rattan palms. The term rattan comes from the Malay language and is derived from the name of the plant. It is often used to make furniture, such as chairs or armchairs, because it is particularly light and strong.

Gifted architect and draughtsman: Paul Schneider-Esleben

Paul Schneider-Esleben (1915-2005) is one of the architects whose buildings had a major influence on post-war modernism - the construction of mega-projects in concrete. For example, he built the Mannesmann high-rise in Düsseldorf (1954-1958), the first steel skeleton building with a curtain wall in Germany. Schneider-Esleben was an exceptionally gifted draughtsman and a versatile designer who designed furniture and jewellery, including the TT54 designer chair.
