Cosiness: Armchair 406 armchair from Artek

The special feature of this chair is the armrests, which are moulded from a single piece and split in two to ensure that the armchair is perfectly balanced. A statement for anyone who likes striking designs.

Ingenious pioneer in furniture design: architect and designer Alvar Aalto

Alvar Aalto is regarded as one of the best designers and architects in the world. Back in the 1930s, the Finn astounded us with designs that are still an integral part of the furniture industry today. Aalto is also a pioneer in plywood processing. Influenced by the German Bauhaus, he experimented with this material from the end of the 1920s and, together with his wife Aino Aalto, created numerous pieces of furniture that combined modern forms with natural materials. His architectural masterpieces include the Paimio Clinic in Turku (now a World Heritage Site), the library in Viipuri (in present-day Russia) and the Finnish pavilion at the 1939 World's Fair in New York.

Artek - always modern

Artek was founded in Helsinki in 1935 by four young idealists: Alvar and Aino Aalto, Maire Gullichsen and Nils-Gustav Hahl. They wanted to promote a modern culture of living with their designs. The radical spirit of its founders still lives on in Artek today, and the company produces furniture from the world of modern design that stands at the interface of design, architecture and art. They are characterised by clarity, functionality and poetic simplicity.

Material and format

The armchair, made of linen webbing with a cantilevered birch frame and a seat made of woven linen, measures H 87 cm x W 60 cm x D 72 cm.
