Luminous artwork: Akari pendant lamp YP1 by Vitra
To ensure that the warmth of the sun continues to fill the rooms at night, artist Isamu Noguchi created the Akari Light Sculptures from Washi paper. By the choice of the material, the cool electricity was supposed to act like sunlight.
Bright Light
The term Akari comes from the Japanese and means light and brightness. It is not surprising that the artist of the Akari series chose this name for his collection. The lamps create a particularly warm and pleasant light.
The YP1 is one of 100 models produced, all of which are elaborately handcrafted in the Ozeki manufactory in Gifu, a traditional family business. First of all bamboo rods are stretched on the original wooden form of Noguchi. They form the ribs on which the Washi paper is then wound. After drying, the wooden form is removed and the umbrella can be folded, packed and shipped.
Material and format
The shade consists of partially painted Washi paper with wooden and bamboo ends. The feet are made of painted steel wire. The lamp has a diameter of 50 cm and is 38 cm high.
