Luminous work of art: Akari pendant light YP1 from Vitra
The artist Isamu Noguchi created the Akari Light Scultptures from washi paper so that the warmth of the sun can continue to fill the rooms at night. The choice of material was intended to make the cool electricity appear like sunlight.
Bright light
The term Akari comes from the Japanese and means light and brightness. It is not surprising that the artist of the Akari series chose this name for his collection. The luminaires produce a particularly warm and cosy light.
The YP1 is one of 100 models produced, all of which are elaborately handcrafted in the Ozeki manufactory in Gifu, a traditional family business. Bamboo rods are first stretched over the original Noguchi wooden mould. They form the ribbing onto which the washi paper is then stretched. After drying, the wooden mould is removed and the umbrella can be folded, packaged and dispatched.
Material and format
The umbrella is made of partially painted washi paper with wooden and bamboo ends. The feet are made of painted steel wire. The lamp has a diameter of 50 cm and is 38 cm high.
