Sun and Moon: Akari Light Sculptures 16A by Vitra
The signum of the Akari Light Sculptures depicts the contours of the sun and moon, which also resemble the corresponding Japanese characters. Isamu Noguchi wanted to create luminaires that let the warmth of the sun shine in rooms even at night.
Well-formed and luminous
The artist chose the name Akari Light Sculptures as the name for his lamp collection - Akari is Japanese and stands for brightness and light. During his travels to Japan, Noguchi visited the city of Gifu, known for its paper lanterns. There he created his first models of the series - since 1951 he has designed a total of 100 different lamps.
The 16A ceiling lamp is characterised by its rounded shape and the pleasant warm light created by the use of Washi paper as the material for the shade.
Material and shape
The shade consists of partly painted washi paper with wooden and bamboo trim. The ceiling lamp is 28 cm high, 52 cm wide and 48 cm deep.
