Luminosity: Akari Light Sculptures 9A by Vitra
In order for the warmth of the sun to continue to fill the rooms at night, the artist Isamu Noguchi created the Akari Light Scultptures from Washi paper. The choice of material meant that the cool electricity would act like sunlight.
Brightness and Light
The term Akari comes from Japanese and means light and brightness. It is not surprising that the artist of the Akari series has chosen this name for his collection. The lamps produce a particularly warm and pleasant light.
The 9A is one of 100 models made by Ozeki in Gifu, a traditional family business, all of which are elaborately handcrafted. First bamboo rods are stretched on the wooden original form of Noguchi. They form the ribbed work on which the washi paper is then drawn. After drying the wooden form is removed and the shade can be folded, packed and shipped.
Material and shape
The shade consists of partly painted washi paper with wooden and bamboo trim. The feet are made of painted steel wire. The floor lamp is 70 cm high and 44 cm wide and deep.
