Akari is the Japanese expression for brightness and light, which also includes lightness - so it is not surprising that the American-Japanese artist and designer Isamu Noguchi christened his luminaires Akari Light Sculptures.
The designer: Isamu Noguchi
Isamu Noguchi was born in Los Angeles in 1904, the son of a Japanese poet and an American writer. He studied at Columbia University and at the Leonardo da Vinci Art School. Isamu Noguchi was a versatile artist and designer whose life and work in the most diverse cultural circles were reflected in his artistic creations. He is regarded as a universal talent and designed sculptures, furniture, lamps and even stage sets. His sculptural style is particularly evident in pieces such as the Noguchi Coffee Table by Vitra.
Material and format
The lamps are made of washi paper with a structure of bamboo/steel wire. Depending on the version, they have different dimensions:
