Arne Jacobsen
"It took me a year to get the first chair before I dared to bring it out." - Arne Jacobsen on the ant
The Danish architect, designer and lecturer Arne Jacobsen was born in Copenhagen in 1902. After he had finished his apprenticeship as a bricklayer he studied at the Technical Society School and at the Faculty of Architecture at the Royal Academy of Arts in Copenhagen, where he graduated in 1928.
Arne Jacobsen was very productive both as a designer and as an architect. As an architect, Arne Jacobsen was responsible, for example, for the construction of various town halls, schools, hotels and the Central Bank of Kuwait. In addition to various works as an architect, Jacobsen began his collaboration with the furniture company Fritz Hansen in 1932, for which he designed chairs and armchairs over three decades, which are considered milestones in Danish design.
These include, for example, the Ant and 3107 chairs and the Swan and Egg armchairs. Arne Jacobsen was professor of architecture at the Academy in Copenhagen from 1956 until his death. He died 1971 in Copenhagen.
