Alvar Aalto
"Don´t forget to play." - Alvar Aalto
Alvar Aalto is considered one of the most famous representatives of modern architecture and design. He was born in 1898 in Kuortane in Finland and studied architecture at the Helsinki Polytechnic until 1921. In 1924 he married the architect Aino Marsio, and their marriage created a lifelong partnership that had a decisive influence on the international design world.
In addition to public institutions such as concert halls, museums and universities, Aalto also designed private residential buildings and their interiors. Many of his furniture and household objects are inspired by his architectural designs.
Aalto's unique aesthetic gift significantly defined the term Finnish design and made it accessible to a broad and global audience. The designer's designs are characterised by a harmonious interplay of nature and function and an eye for detail and materials. Many of his designs were therefore exhibited internationally as early as the 1930s, for example at the MoMA in New York.
