Since the end of the 1930s, Charles Eames had been thinking ofcreating a shell-like chair that could be mass-produced industrially. But it was not until 1948 that the idea was realised on the occasion of an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York: The chairs made of glass fibre reinforced polyester became a bestseller for the American furniture manufacturer Herman Milleras Plastic Side Chair and Armchair .Get the EamesPlastic Side Chair DSR in white with chrome-plated frame here in a practical set of 4!
Material and format
From January 2024, Vitra will focus on sustainability by manufacturing all seat shells of the Eames Plastic Chairs from recycled post-consumer plastic. The seat shells are provided with a minimal glass fibre reinforcement for stability and quality, whereby the glass fibre content of an Eames Plastic Chair RE seat shell is 10%. Thanks to the use of recycled packaging waste, the seat shells have minimal colour pigmentation.
The colour white in Virgin Plastic is available until the end of 2024 The new Cotton White colour of the RE version is a natural white with the aforementioned pigmentation due to the manufacturing process.
