Popular lamp: A331 Beehive pendant lamp by Artek
One of the most popular lighting designs by Alvar Aalto is the A331 pendant lamp also called Beehive. It is suitable for use in public as well as in private rooms, because it creates a warm and diffuse light. Its perforated steel rings ensure this and at the same time give it its unmistakable, sculptural design. It was originally designed for the Finnish University of Jyväskylä in 1953.
Designer Alvar Aalto
Alvar Aalto was one of the co-founders of Artek. He designed many important public institutions and private houses during his life and long career. Aalto's designs are unmistakably Finnish, yet very individual and bear witness to a warm humanity. His buildings are connected to their natural surroundings and base their aesthetics on excellently executed details and the ingenious use of lighting.
The design of furniture followed as a natural extension of his architectural thinking and in 1931 he designed his first piece of modern furniture for the tuberculosis sanatorium in Paimio, Finland. Artek was founded in 1935 to market and sell his and his wife's designs for furniture, lighting and textiles.
